[SOLVED] DIY Ford Escape V6 Change Spark Plugs

Even though changing the spark plugs in your Ford Escape V6 is a bit different than in other SUV's, it is still a straightforward process. Most home DIY'ers should be able to replace the spark plugs in a Ford Escape,

Things You'll Need

Ratchet set with extender bar

Screwdriver

Spark plug socket

Set of six intake manifold gaskets

  • Pop the hood and find the nuts holding the black cover on top of the engine. In the Ford Escape, there are 3 8-mm nuts holding the cover down. Take off the nuts and remove of the cover
  • Find the air intake hose close to the windshield. Locate the clamp fixing the hose to the throttle body. Using your screwdriver loosen the clap. Remove the hose from the throttle assembly and put it aside. Remove the hose that is inside  the end of the air hose.

  • Take off the throttle and cruise control cables from the throttle body. The Ford Escape throttle cable twists off, while the cruise control cable has release tabs.  Take off the screws holding the cable to the intake manifold, and place the bracket and screws in a container.
  • Unplug the throttle position sensor and idle air control . Find the vacuum and vapor hoses on the vapor management valve. Gently lift apart the tabs on these hoses to remove them.
  • Find the vacuum hose on the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. Take off this hose, and the two hoses connecting to the EGR solenoid. Push the tab on the solenoid connector to release it. Take off the EGR tube from the valve with a 1 1/8-inch wrench.

  • Pull apart the vacuum hoses and unplug the electrical connectors from the manifold. Remove the nut connecting the wiring bracket to the EGR solenoid. Put these items in a container.
  • Take off the bolts holding the upper manifold to the lower manifolds. The Ford Escape has 8 bolts around the manifold. Place clean rags in the intake ports to keep debris out of the engine.
  • Pinch the connectors for each Coil on Plug (COP) to disconnect. There is a COP for each cylinder. Take off the bolts holding the COPs in place and set the COPs aside.
  • Blow out the spark plug of any debris. Pop on a spark plug socket on a ratchet. Take off each of the six spark plugs.
  • Using a gap tool to gap each new spark plug to 0.052 inches. Using your fingers rub the threads with anti-seize oil.  Using your hand thread the new spark plugs into the spark plug opening. and then tighten them with your socket wrench
  • On the inside of the upper manifold, take off the six gaskets with a screwdriver. Place new gaskets in firmly. Put back the COPs and bolts, then attach the connectors. Take out the shop rags from the intake valves. Reassemble the manifold, EGR valve and solenoid and throttle assembly.
